North Miami Beach police arrested a suspect Friday in the shooting death of a 21-year-old man trying to stop a fight at a 5-month-old’s baptism party.

Police arrested Louis Kenson Avril, 26, of North Miami for the shooting death of Wilson Alexis, 21 on Jan 5.

The party was intended to be a celebration for the Joseph family ahead of a godchild’s baptism, but the party drew a large number of uninvited guests after information about the event was posted on the social media site Tagged.

Police said Alexis attempted to break up an altercation that began when the guests complained that there wasn’t enough food — nor enough utensils — for the large crowd. The homeowner stopped the party and sent everyone outside. After four or five women and a man got into a more serious fight, Alexis intervened and two shots were fired.

Avril has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder, first-degree attempted premeditated murder and reckless discharge of a firearm.

Police are still investigating and are asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477 or North Miami Beach police at 305-949-5500.
