The White House proclaims a success story when a couple in Palm Beach successfully acquires insurance via the Affordable Care Act and saves money over what they would have spent (South Florida story touted by White House, Jan. 4).
The only reason that they were able to get insurance at a savings is that they are being heavily subsidized by the government. The White House does not dwell on where all that money is coming from.
Those funds are coming from cuts in Medicare payments to providers and insurers. Insurance companies like United and Humana are already dropping doctors by the thousands nationwide to save costs.
An editorial cartoon in the same day’s paper suggests that healthcare costs would go up anyway, with or without Obamacare, but these costs are significantly more than we would otherwise see.
