Miramar’s Cole picks FSU over South Carolina, UM

Florida State has made its presence felt in South Florida once again.

Miramar cornerback Tyrek Cole — an underrated four-star prospect by several media outlets — committed to FSU on Thursday night, becoming the sixth member of the Seminoles’ Class of 2015 recruiting class.

“I’m committed to Florida State,” Cole told the Miami Herald before announcing his decision via his Twitter account. “I just like the program, Coach Jimbo [Fisher] and I felt like I go and play early, and I just want to win games. They win games.”

Cole’s commitment comes during an eventful week for the Seminoles. FSU secured a commitment from 2015 Miami Central safety Calvin Brewton — Cole’s best friend — on Thursday, three days after beating Auburn in the BCS National Championship Game. The Noles also received commitments from two Class of 2014 recruits in the past week — Central running back Dalvin Cook and West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman wide receiver Travis Rudolph.

Cole said his relationships with Fisher, defensive ends coach Sal Sunseri and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt were instrumental reasons in wanting to lock down a spot in the Noles’ class.

“I was just trying to pick the best school where I felt comfortable at,” said Cole, who picked FSU over South Carolina, Miami, Florida, and Auburn.

Cole’s decision also comes a day after his high school coach Damon Cogdell accepted a position to coach at his alma mater, West Virginia. Many believed Cole would follow his coach to Morgantown, W. Va., as Miramar receiver Khalil Lewis and running back Alex Anderson — both Class of 2015 prospects — did by committing to the Mountaineers on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. Miramar senior safety Andre Godfrey committed to Utah earlier Thursday.

“At first it was kind of shocking,” Cole said of Cogdell’s move, “but we just have to move on. It was just something Coach had to do. We just got to move on and win games.”

As for Cole, he currently plans to stay at Miramar for his senior season, but can’t wait to make things official in Tallahassee. National Signing Day for his recruiting class is on Feb. 4, 2015.

A showdown between elite playmakers — Pines Charter 6-5 swingman Haanif Cheatham, a four-star prospect by ESPN and his Puerto Rico U-17 national teammate — Cardinal Gibbons’ Jose Morales is expected to draw a standing-room-only crowd at Gibbons on Friday.

That Cheatham is putting up Class 6A Player of the Year numbers in 25.2 points, 10.5 rebounds and 6.4 assists and chasing his fifth triple double this season has made this budding rivalry between SourceHoops Class 6A No. 3 Pines Charter (10-2) and Class 5A No. 2 Cardinal Gibbons (14-3) even bigger.

“Haanif is a matchup problem,” Morales said. “He is a big guard and can pick you apart more by looking over most guards at this level. We do a lot of things similar but I’m going to use my quickness more.”

The outcome will most likely rest on Morales’ speed in the open court or Cheatham, whose ball handling skills at 6-5 and great court vision has allowed him to thrive in the point forward role.

While Morales (14.6 ppg, 10 apg, 3.5 spg) shares the similar high IQ as Cheatham it is his improvisational skills at full speed which sets him apart.

“Every time you think you know the scouting report on Jose, he does something different,” Cheatham said. “On 10 trips downcourt he can do 10 different things. He brings out the best in me me and I bring out the best in him. I have to come out ready and be on my ‘A’ game from start to end.”

Charter coach Dave Roca said he will assign Matthew Johnson — whom Roca has touted as the best perimeter defender in Broward, on Morales.
