John Brownlee dilutes his own message on the need for more and better science in fisheries management with his obsession for cheap shots at the commercial fishing industry in his Dec. 30 article, All fishermen don’t belong in the same boat. Commercial fishing in the United States is one of the most heavily regulated and accountable industries in the world. Unfortunately, data collection for the recreational angling community isn’t on the same level.
Annual catch limits and the Magnuson-Stevens Act are proven and effective methods of fisheries management and benefit both commercial and recreational interests alike. Neither is more burdensome on recreational anglers than any other user group.
At a time when commercial, charter and recreational fishermen are forging new alliances in fisheries management benefitting all of us, Brownlee can’t restrain himself from stirring the pot of animosity between users.
