Sydney, Australia (SportsNetwork.com) - American Madison Keys defeated seventh-seeded Romanian Simona Halep in the first round of the Apia International Sydney on Sunday.
The 18-year-old Keys had little trouble with Halep in a 6-1, 6-4 victory in 1 hour, 12 minutes.
In other action on Sunday, third-seeded Italian Sara Errani was a straight-set winner thanks to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over countrywoman Roberta Vinci, and Croatian Ajla Tomljanovic took down Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 7-5 in the final first-round match of the day.
This is the final tune-up for the Australian Open. The first Grand Slam event of 2014 is set to get underway Jan. 13 in Melbourne.
