Miami man found dead in the New River identified

Fort Lauderdale police on Tuesday said a man found floating in the New River on Monday has been identified.

The victim is Maiker Fernandez, 31, of Miami.

How Fernandez died remains a mystery and police are asking the public’s help in piecing together his final hours.

Initially, police said no foul play was suspected.

Fernandez was last seen by his grandmother on Dec. 26, when he left to meet friends at an unknown location in downtown Fort Lauderdale.

On Monday, police received a call of a man drifting face down in the New River.

Fernandez was found near a park at 1720 SW 17th St. in Fort Lauderdale.

Anyone who may have seen Fernandez between Dec. 26 and Dec.30 is asked to contact Det. Jim Jaggers at 954-828-5970.
