Columbus scores last-second district win over Gables

The Columbus boys’ basketball team scored its second crucial district win this week Wednesday with a 62-61 win against Coral Gables. Danny Rodriguez hit a buzzer-beating layup with 0.9 seconds left and led the team with 22 points and 12 rebounds. The Explorers (11-3) also beat defending Class 8A state runner-up South Miami Monday.

In-game coaching will be put to the test when FABC-SourceHoops Class 3A No. 2 Sagemont (10-0) faces perennial Alabama state power George Washington Carver in the Kreul Classic Power 96 Elite Challenge on Thursday.

Without the familiarity of facing each other, Sagemont’s Adam Ross and Carver’s James Jackson will rely heavier on making adjustments on the fly to slow down each other's star small forward.

Jackson has his work cut out against Sagemont’s 6-4 swingman Prince Ali, a Connecticut commit while Ross will try to keep Mississippi State 6-6 commit Demetrius Houston in check.

If Ali breaking the game open with his explosiveness isn’t enough to preoccupy Jackson, then 6-10 UCLA signee G.G. Goloman, 6-5 Jordan Cooper and point guard Lance Crawford each having the potential to put up 20-plus points should.

The Kreul culminates on Saturday with championship games in the Publix Challenge, The Rock Challenge and Kreul brackets

On Friday the South Florida Holiday Showcase tips off with perennial girls’ basketball state contenders South Broward, Norland, Lourdes, Nova and 2012-13 Class 3A state runnerup Miami Country Day stepping into the spotlight at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Hollywood.

Lourdes faces Oxbridge at 7:30 while Saturday’s marquee is highlighted by Miami Country Day (9-1) against Dwyer at 4:30.

Nova and three-point ace Bernadette Devaney, faces Oxbridge at 6:00 while South Broward, led by Briyana Lloyd faces Miami Norland at 7:30.
