Northeast hurdler Daeshon Gordon commits to LSU

flyon@MiamiHerald.com

Northeast All-American and two-time state champion hurdler Daeshon Gordon has made an oral commitment to LSU after weighing offers from other perennial NCAA track powers Miami, Tennessee, Clemson and UCF, among others.

“LSU is a stable program that has produced,” Gordon said. “I’m guaranteed to get better there. I’ve always thought about running on the next level. When I learned track was a business and that it was going to change my life in the future, I took it more seriously.”

Gordon already had established herself as one of the most coveted prep hurdlers in the United States even before her stock spiked at the Jamaica National Junior Championships and Trials this past Summer.

Gordon set personal bests to win the 400-meter hurdles (58.92), in only her third time running the event, and finish fourth in the 100 hurdles (13.70) to qualify for the IAAF World Youth Championships in Ukraine.

Gordon’s new 400-meter hurdles time ranked third in the world. Unfortunately, a mistake in providing documentation confirming Gordon’s Jamaican nationality (her parents are Jamaican nationals) left Gordon unable to compete in the Youth Championships.

Gordon emerged as an elite hurdler in her sophomore season when she helped Boyd Anderson break through from perennial runner-up status to Class 4A state champion.

Last May she defended her Class 4A 300 hurdles state title (42.16) and finished second in the 100 hurdles (13.99) before her transfer to Northeast this past summer, which should catapult the Hurricanes to state title contender.

Gordon followed up her successful state title defense by winning the 100 meters hurdles (13.77) and her 400 hurdles debut (1:00.92) at the Golden South Classic, placing first.

Gordon went undefeated in the 300 hurdles until the Great Southwest Classic in New Mexico, where she ran a personal-best 42.15, but finished second. She also ran 13.87 in the 100 hurdles to finish fourth.
