TEAMS OF THE WEEK

The South Dade football team secured its first-ever state championship with a 41-28 upset victory over defending state champion Apopka in the Class 8A final. Senior quarterback Kahlil Render led the Bucs tying a state championship game record for touchdown passes with five. Senior receiver C.J. Worton caught three of them.

The Central football team won its third state championship in the past four seasons by routing Seffner Armwood 52-7 in the Class 6A final. The Rockets were led by one final impressive performance from senior running back Dalvin Cook, who had 223 yards and four touchdowns.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Tylan Birts and Daniel Cooper, South Dade, boys’ basketball: Birts and Cooper each averaged 16 points and eight rebounds in two district wins over Southridge and Killian.

Trey Mourning, Ransom Everglades, boys’ basketball: Mourning set a school-record for points in a game with 52 in a 94-65 win against La Salle.

Danielle Minott, Miami Country Day, girls’ basketball: Minott scored 35 points to lead the Spartans to a 67-42 win against defending Class 7A state runner-up Nova.

Mel Jordan, Lourdes, girls’ basketball: Jordan had 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bobcats to a win against South Miami.

Ozzie Lugo, Patricio Lugo III, Isaiah Crosby, Maleek Williams and Justin Ramirez, South Dade, wrestling: The five standouts all won championships for the Bucs at the South Beach Slam.

Jake Deuel, Ransom Everglades, boys’ soccer: Deuel recorded shutouts against Gulliver Prep and La Salle to keep the Raiders undefeated.

Katelyn Godoy, Florida Christian, girls’ soccer: Godoy scored five goals in a win against Monsignor Pace.

    Two Cooper City athletes sign with colleges

    Cooper City pitcher and first baseman Johnny Haney signed a scholarship with the Point Park University (Pittsburgh) baseball team. The left-hander is 6-0 so far this season with 31 strikeouts, three complete games and 1.28 ERA. He is hitting .317 with a homerun, 13 RBI and 16 runs scored.

    Doctors Charter boys’ track relay teams qualifiy for states

    The Dade Christian boys’ track 4x100 relay team will head to the State Championship for its second year in a row. Abigael Neus, Sam Mompremier, Jeanmaxon Adrien, and Cameron Floyd. Darwin Abreu qualified fourth overall in the mile. The 4x400 relay team, Torrian Wallace, Jovyn Pierre, Andrew Dodds, and Jonathan Gill needed to finish fourth out of 16 teams and run under a 3:42 to qualify for states. Freshman Jonathan Gill lead the team to a time of 3:36, awarding them fourth place to also qualify them for states.
