I thank The Children’s Trust and Markets Group for their donation of glossy Disney books to our school libraries. However, I am sad that the money earmarked from the state's budget for library books isn’t given to Miami-Dade County school libraries.
As a retired media specialist, almost none of the Miami-Dade school libraries have been given money to buy books for the past six years. Most media specialists have to go to PTAs or do fund-raising.
Reading is the basis for children’s success in school and life. But Miami-Dade statistics, where 55 percent of our students struggle with reading, seem to parallel the closing of school libraries and the lack of funding in our county.
