South Florida celebrates Nelson Mandela with events on Thursday


Nelson Mandela’s life will be celebrated at several South Florida events on Thursday.

At 4 p.m., local leaders will gather at the Arsht Center near downtown Miami for a memorial service and celebration. Email for information or reservations and follow the event on Twitter at #MandelaMiami.

At 6 p.m., the city of North Miami will celebrate Mandela;s legacy with music and dance. The event will be in front of the Museum of Contemporary Art at the MOCA Plaza, 770 NE 125th St.

Mandela, the former president of South Africa and global human rights leader, died last week. His body is lying in state in the presidential complex until Sunday’s funeral.
