Broward man dies in Key Largo dinghy accident

KEYSINFONET

A Broward County man died last weekend after falling into the water of Card Sound off North Key Largo.

Dennis C. Gillette, 74, of Fort Lauderdale was aboard an eight-foot inflatable dinghy to help his wife move items onto a larger boat in Card Sound, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported.

Mildred Gillette "turned around and found Mr. Gillette floating face down in the water, approximately 15 feet from the dinghy," investigator Bryan Fugate said in an initial report of accident at 4 p.m. Saturday.

She then swam to him with a pool noodle and tried to tow him back to their vessel. A neighbor from a nearby boat helped in the rescue effort but first-aid resuscitation failed to revive Dennis Gillette.

An emergency-response ambulance from Ocean Reef responded, but Gillette had already died. Florida Fish and Wildlife is investigating the fatality as a boating accident.

The body was taken to the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office on Crawl Key for an autopsy.
