On Nov. 15, President Obama nominated Dr. Vivek Murthy to serve as the next surgeon general of the United States.
At 36, he is the youngest physician to ever be nominated for the position.
Dr. Murthy graduated from Miami Palmetto High school in 1994. A new surgeon general is news everywhere, but you would think that it would especially worthwhile fodder in the city where he grew up.
To fill in some of the blanks, he was a recipient of the Silver Knight Award and attended Harvard University. He is a physician and instructor in medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School. He is the founder of Doctors for America, where more than 15,000 physicians support legislation that would improve access to healthcare.
I urge the rest of the community to join me in congratulating Dr. Murthy for this enormous achievement.
