Watching the evening news has become a disturbing event. Headline stories about people shot, killed, stabbed, robbed and raped make viewing TV with kids in the room uncomfortable. Innocent children executed during the commission of a felony. Teachers having sexual affairs with students. Kids murdering their parents for being disciplined. Kids shooting classmates and teachers. Fleeing felons shooting cops and killing innocent bystanders. People abusing animals, be it through neglect or in the name of religion. Disgruntled employees killing co-workers and bosses.
Without watching TV in the privacy of our bedroom, how do I explain to our son that this is just another day in paradise and that bad people do bad things? Why do we have to make public such trauma? I find myself changing the channel just to protect his young innocent mind and save myself from a distasteful explanation of mankind. What a pathetic society we have become.
