Carnival Corp. has named Vice Admiral William Burke, who spent 35 years in the U.S. Navy, to the new position of chief maritime officer. The appointment is effective Monday.
Burke will oversee maritime operations for the parent company around the world, including maritime quality assurance and policy, shipbuilding, ship refits and research and development.
In other news this week, the company also announced that it was donating more than $1.5 million with several partners to relief efforts in the Philippines.
Donations to help those affected by Typhoon Haiyan include $500,000 for UNICEF; $300,000 for Save the Children; $250,000 to Direct Relief; $150,000 to the International Red Cross and $50,000 to International Medical Corps. The donations come from the parent company, Carnival Foundation, 10 cruise brands under the Carnival Corp. umbrella, Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation and Miami Heat, which Arison owns.
The company’s brands are also giving almost $350,000 to support employees from the Philippines and their families who have been affected by the storm.
