Ferguson girls savor first basketball win over Lourdes

rpalacios@MiamiHerald.com

Tabitha Gonzalez scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Ferguson girls’ basketball team beat Lourdes Academy for the first time in school history 82-61 on Tuesday night.

Annie Osceola scored 20 points, and Nachalie DeJesus added 19 points.

“I’m really happy for my kids,” coach Gabriel Lazo said. “This is a big win for our program.”

Ferguson had been searching for this elusive win against Lourdes for a long time.

The Falcons (7-1) finally have the talent to match up with Lourdes, but it was the character of their players, not the talent, that put them over the top.

“It’s character, Gonzalez’s biggest attribute is her character,’’ Lazo said. “Annie Osceola is a high-character kid. And today DeJesus came to play.”

The win provides a sweet feeling, but that feeling won’t last.

Ferguson will have to play district rival Lourdes again, and the next time might be in the playoffs.

“At the end of the day we have to see them again; they have a great program and a great coach,” Lazo said. “We want to be where they are. Hopefully, we get to see them again.”

“I don’t take any credit for this. All the credit goes toward my kids,” Lazo said of his team’s stellar play.

“I have three girls that have the potential to be All-Dade.”
