Re the Nov. 27 article Port site in play for soccer stadium: As a downtown resident and British business owner, I see PortMiami as the ideal choice for a Major League Soccer stadium for David Beckham’s consortium of investors. Unlike the Marlins stadium fiasco, this location works because the stadium needs only 25,000 takers, and the Brickell-to-Omni resident population of soccer lovers alone can fill those seats.
Add the thousands of year-round visiting Brits who will take in a nearby match along with the armies of visitors to Bayside from the world’s soccer-loving nations. The international guests at downtown Miami’s hotels could walk to this MLS stadium.
The overriding advantage to the port location is that it can be filled by walkers, not drivers, and there’s ample public transportation that already works on packed Heat nights.
Approving a soccer stadium on the PortMiami site would be a shrewd decision by elected officials, and would atone for their past head scratching ones.
