Idea to fill downtown Miami slip resurfaces

crabin@MiamiHerald.com

For decades, a large slip at the south end of Miami’s Bicentennial Park has sat empty, an under-utilized piece of property where elected leaders have daydreamed of placing docks, restaurants and bars.

Ideas surfaced when the Miami Heat built the adjacent AmericanAirlines Arena. Yet 13 years later, the slip is still there.

And once again, filling the slip is being bandied about — this time, with fill pulled from the nearby PortMiami dredging project.

Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez have discussed the potential project to bring more greenery to the coastline. Gimenez said filling the slip could help connect the waterfront for pedestrians.

Regalado said the city is considering it.

What the slip is not being considered for: a soccer stadium for superstar David Beckham and his group of investors, who are looking to secure a new Major League Soccer franchise.
