My 305 style: Jorge Perez

Special to the Miami Herald

Developer, art collector and namesake of the soon-to-open Perez Art Museum Miami, JORGE PEREZ is known for his sharp sartorial style, as well as signature projects like Icon Brickell and One Ocean. Perez knows that while clothes may not make the man, they are integral to a sharp presentation. “Fashion is art, right? It’s just a different type of art,” he says. “People think I’m really fashion conscious, but I’m not. I just think that I believe that being appropriately dressed says a lot about you and the respect that you show to people.” For business, that means a tailored suit like this one from Armani; at a gala, it’s a classic tux, also by Armani. Marathon art events like Art Basel call for his “uniform”: a grey pair of pants, blue blazer and crisp sport shirt.

His favorite Miami store: Damiani. 8865 South Dixie Hwy., Pinecrest; 305-661-0002;

Day to day, Perez lives in a suit. For art events, he dons one of his favorites from Italian fashion house Armani, $1,695 to $2,095, available locally at Saks Fifth Avenue, (Bal Harbour Shops, 9700 Collins Ave., Bal Harbour, 305-865-1100, and Dadeland Mall, 7687 N. Kendall Dr., Miami, 305-662-8655). Mixed patterns (checkered tie, striped shirt with monogrammed cuff) add verve; both are tailor-made from English bespoke house Turnbull & Asser, available in New York, London and at Cufflinks also by Turnbull & Asser, $325, from

Miami shoe expert Donald Pliner outfits Perez with simple but classic leather shoes, $495, at Donald J. Pliner stores in Dadeland Mall, (7535 N. Kendall Dr., Miami, 305-774-5880) and Aventura Mall (19575 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura, 305-792-4774);

His 30-year fascination with timepieces has resulted in a collection of 30 watches — so far. “I have one for almost every occasion.” His Cartier tank is a favorite, $2,640, available locally at Cartier Aventura, 575 Biscayne Blvd., 305-521-1800;

Classic style includes tuxes like this Armani, $1,995, paired with classic black cummerbund and tie and white shirt. Available at Bloomingdale’s (19555 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura, 305-792-1000, and The Falls, 8778 SW 136th St., Miami, 305-252-6300).

Lippi, the new restaurant from Phillippe Ruiz, formerly of Palm d’Or, backed by a Zuma investor. Beautiful food in a stunning setting — and it’s near Perez’s downtown office. 600 Brickell Ave., 305-579-1888;

Maserati GranCabrio takes advantage of Miami’s natural attributes. From about $137,000. Available at The Collection, 200 Bird Rd., Coral Gables; 305-444-5555;
