Two people found shot to death in a car appear to have been killed in a murder-suicide, detectives in the Keys said Wednesday.
Jim Ovecka, 49, and Michelle Chapman, 54, were found dead Monday by a Monroe County Mosquito Control employee. Their bodies were in a running 2004 Honda Element in a wooded area of Big Pine Key.
Monroe detectives said Ovecka shot Chapman in the head before shooting himself. A hose was taped to the tailpipe and run into the car from a back window, detectives said.
The couple were from Arizona, according to their driver’s licenses. Keys deputies said Ovecka and Chapman owned a restaurant in Corpus Christi, Texas, and had been arrested on theft charges.
The former owners of Two Georges’ Seafood Restaurant in Corpus Christi were arrested in February in Tucson on charges of defrauding customers of tens of thousands of dollars according to KRISTV.com in Texas. They were accused of making more than $200,000 in charges on diners’ credit cards, according to Caller.com.
