Westminster Christian hangs on late to defeat Cardinal Newman

Special to the Miami Herald

Westminster outlasts Cardinal Newman 55-48 for first 3A Regional Championship since 1973

In what might be the most thrilling game of the season, the Westminster Warriors stave off a fierce comeback by the Cardinal Newman Crusaders to claim their first 3A Regional Championship since 1973.

When Oliver Black intercepted Daniel Cole and returned it 75 yards for the touchdown late in the forth quarter, it seemed the game was out of reach for Cardinal Newman.

Cole bounced back to throw two touchdown passes, a 27-yard pass to Marcello Bertuzzelli and a 15-yard pass to Collin Grill.

Each of those two touchdowns were followed by an onside kick. With a chance to tie the game, Cole's pass was once again intercepted and the fate of the Crusaders were sealed.
