The North Star and simulated skydiving will be coming to Fort Lauderdale on a cruise ship — eventually.
Royal Caribbean International announced Thursday that Anthem of the Seas will be based in Southampton in the UK when it launches in spring 2015. The 4,180-passenger vessel, the second in its class, will sail from Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades in the winter.
The Miami-based cruise company already sails its two largest ships, Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, from Port Everglades. Anthem sister ship Quantum of the Seas will sail from Cape Liberty, N.J. after it debuts in November of 2014.
The Quantum class includes several features new to Royal Caribbean, including a simulated skydiving experience, a mounted capsule called the North Star that carries passengers hundreds of feet in the air, a circus school, studio staterooms for solo travelers and "virtual balconies" for inside rooms.
