American Heritage’s Sony Michel is bowl-game award nominee

American Heritage running back Sony Michel has been nominated for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Player of the Year award.

Michel, who was chosen to play in the annual game Jan. 4 in San Antonio, is one of 16 players nationwide nominated for the award, and the only nominee from South Florida.

The list of nominees will be narrowed to six Tuesday and the winner will be announced Jan. 3 at a ceremony in San Antonio.

Michel has run for 1,066 yards and 13 touchdowns on 146 carries this season, and caught seven passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns helping the Patriots to a 10-1 record and the Region 4-5A semifinals.


American Heritage point guard Hunter Osceola signed with Barry University.

The 6-foot, 165-pound Osceola is the first recruit to sign with Barry for the 2014-15 season.

Girls’ soccer

The North Broward Prep girls’ soccer team shut down St. Andrews 5-0 on Wednesday night.

Adrianna Dubay led the Eagles with two goals and one assist.

Morgan Sherman, Marianna Minilia and Yasmin Ruffel-Smith also scored for North Broward Prep.

Sam Susi registered her fourth shutout of the season.

The Eagles are now 7-1-1 and face Cypress Bay on Friday at 5 p.m.

Boys’ soccer

•  Monarch 3, Coral Glades 2: Eddie Almeida led the Monarch boys over Coral Glades.

Almeida registered one a goal and an assist. Gian Scalise, and Juan Martinez each scored one goal.

Jovani Mendieta and Andres Roldan each scored a goal for the Coral Glades Jaguars. The Knights (5-1-1) take on Taravella on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Andre Blackman, Andre Batista, Kenny Felix and Gonzolto Dussan scored for Pembrooke Pines Charter.

•  Blanche Ely 6, Dryfoos 2: Kivens Joseph led the Tigers (2-2-1) with three goals. Milton Cabrera contributed two assists. Carmeley Charité, Taweh Browne, Kervens Surpris also scored for Blanche Ely.

Dryfoos dropped to 1-4.

The Tigers will take on Cocconut Creek today at 5 p.m.
