I agree with letter writer Christopher Cooke-Yarborough that the wet foot-dry foot policy is “unconscionable” in the context of a policy that would consider denying visas to “locals who aided the military in Afghanistan.” But the latter policy is unconscionable even without such an invidious comparison.
W. M. Fichtel’s Nov. 16 letter points out the message that this sends to other locals contemplating helping the United States in the future — a valid point.
What I find troubling is the assumption that we will need such help in the future — that the next Afghanistan is inevitable. Won’t we ever learn?
