Wrong-way crash on the Sawgrass kills one woman, injures two others

Sun Sentinel

A wrong-way crash on the Sawgrass Expressway early Sunday left one Coral Springs woman dead and another in critical condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Killed in the collision was Marisa Caran Catronio, 21, who was a passenger in a 2012 Toyota Camry being driven by Kaitlyn Nicole Ferrante, also 21.

The two Coral Springs women were traveling west on the expressway near University Drive at 1:45 a.m. when a 2004 Hyundai Sonata going east on the wrong side of the highway struck their vehicle head-on, according to the FHP.

Catronio was pronounced dead at the scene. Ferrante was taken to Broward Health North, where she was reported in critical condition.

The driver of the Hyundai, Kayla Maria Mendoza, 20, of Hallandale Beach, was also taken to Broward Health North. She was reported in serious condition.

The crash shut down the westbound lanes of the highway for more than four hours, FHP said. The roadway reopened for traffic at 6:30 a.m.

FHP is trying to determined if alcohol played a role in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
