Westminster Christian’s offense put up big numbers throughout a 9-1 regular season. To win its first-round playoff game Friday, the Warriors needed a gritty performance from its defense.

Westminster Christian registered eight sacks, including two clutch ones from Brett Benson on its final defensive series to hang on for a 10-7 win against visiting Pahokee in a Region 4-3A semifinal.

The Warriors (10-1), ranked No. 16 in the Miami Herald’s South Florida Top 20, will travel to play West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman on Friday in the regional finals. Westminster Christian’s victory was its first in the postseason since 1998.

Westminster persevered in spite of injuries to key players including junior receiver Jordan Cronkrite, who sprained his ankle in the third quarter and did not return.

“It was a tough game, but we played tough for our hurt players,” junior Tim Irvin said. “The defense played a big part for us, and they were very prepared for this game.”
