The proposal by two Florida senators to raise the posted speed limit to 75 miles per hour will make our roadways less safe and increase crashes and fatalities. It also comes at a time when the primary enforcement agency in this state, the Florida Highway Patrol is experiencing the worst personnel crisis in its history, which means less enforcement on our roadways.
Studies have shown that raising the speed limit only encourages drivers to further exceed the newly posted limit, increasing the chances for serious accidents and fatalities.
In whose interest is it to raise the speed limit? The answer is that it is not in the best interest of the majority of drivers. The Florida Senate should vote No on this ill-advised and unsafe proposal.
