WLRN Public Radio and Television announced changes in its leadership on Monday to set the foundation for an expansion, including a daily morning show.
Radio and television journalist Tom Hudson will become vice president of news, a new position as WLRN expands into new platforms. Terence Shepherd and Alicia Zuckerman will run the day-to-day operations of WLRN-Miami Herald News. Shepherd will be news director, overseeing hard news coverage, and Zuckerman will be editorial director, overseeing enterprise and features, said John Labonia, general manager of WLRN Public Radio and Television.
All three journalists have experiences on multiple news-delivery platforms, and that is important because WLRN will be providing content for radio, television, print and online channels, Labonia said. “We are expanding the collaboration with the Miami Herald, we are going to bring news into WLRN television, we are going to be launching a morning show on radio that will run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., a South Florida version of Morning Edition,” he said. New studios downtown and in the Miami Herald’s Doral office are under construction.
Hudson joined WLRN in 2013 as a special correspondent, creator and host of “ The Sunshine Economy.’’ He also hosts “ The Florida Roundup,’’ WLRN’s award-winning weekly public-affairs program, and authors a weekly column in the Miami Herald’s Money section. For more than three years, Hudson was co-anchor and managing editor of the “ Nightly Business Report’’ on public television, which was awarded the 2012 Program of Excellence Award by American Public Television. “Tom’s qualifications are impeccable, his leadership abilities are outstanding and he possesses print, TV and radio experience,” said Labonia.
Shepherd joined the company in 2011 as assignment editor, and previously spent almost 14 years at the Miami Herald as a Business Monday editor, Money editor, business weekend editor and multimedia editor. Zuckerman was previously interim news director and senior editor for enterprise for WLRN-Miami Herald News. She joined WLRN in 2008 as co-creator of “ Under the Sun.’’ “We have brought together one of the best, if not the best, leadership teams in public media news,” Labonia said.
