I was shocked to read about the number of kids being sent to jail in the Nov. 11 article Student arrests down at South Florida schools. This not only ruins their families, but ruins furthering their education and their chances of getting good jobs. I remember things my friends and I did in school that were just ways to gain attention, but nobody went to jail. The only kids that went to jail were kids that got involved in serious actions like armed robbery and assault.
I believe the root of putting kids in jail is the privatization of prisons. It’s a lucrative business. I once read an article that some judge was sentencing kids to jail for minor offenses because he was getting $5,000 a head from the jail the kids were sent to.
