Fernandez leads Columbus to easy win vs. Palmetto

Special to the Miami Herald

Looking to fine-tune things before next week’s first-round playoff game against North Miami, Columbus cruised past Palmetto at Tropical Park on Friday night to close out a 6-4 regular season.

The Explorers did most of their damage in the first half on a pair of touchdown runs of 5 and 2 yards from Andres Fernandez (10 carries, 53 yards) and a 65-yard punt return by Sasha Kelsey just before halftime to stake Columbus to a 19-0 lead at intermission.

Palmetto, which finished 3-7, got its only score with 8:14 left on a Dwayne Pruitt 5-yard touchdown run.
