On Oct. 15 the Cross Connection Control Unit of the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department sent me a letter saying that, pursuant to EPA and state requirements, my premises needed to have a pressure vacuum breaker installed and tested by Jan. 1. Anticipating a backup I acted quickly, hiring a plumber and a certified inspector to make sure my property complied, spending $373.45 in the process.
On Oct. 29, an assistant director of the Water & Sewer Department sent me a second letter saying that the first letter was sent in error; that only certain commercial accounts are required to have the backflow prevention device. He apologized for the confusion this might have caused. Confusion? Clearly it existed within his department’s Cross Connection Control Unit. I followed their directions and am $373.45 poorer for having complied.
