Rushing attack sparks Coral Gables past Miami Beach

Trailing 14-3 and possibly facing a three-way tie for the District 15-8A championship, the Coral Gables Cavaliers (8-1, 5-0) stayed true to their game plan.

They ran the ball.

Running back Gregory Howell ran 24 times for 202 yards — just 38 in the first half — and quarterback Dijion Smith provided two rushing scores in a 24-14 win over the Miami Beach Hi-Tides (6-3, 3-2) on Friday night.

“We just started to run the ball better,’’ coach Roger Pollard said.

Miami Beach kept Howell in check in the first half holding him to just 38 yards when he entered the contest averaging 170 per game. He did not reach the endzone, but he finished the game with 24 critical carries and a torn jersey from tugging defenders.

"Everyone is concerned with end results," Pollard said about Howell not reaching the endzone. "It’s more about what you do to help win."

The Hi-Tides scored twice in the third quarter with a 90-yard dash by Markel Anderson and a fumble-recovery touchdown by Anderson.

Columbus finishes as district runner-up.
