Columbus cruises against winless Coral Park

Special to the Miami Herald

The Explorers started off the game by recovering an onside kick and never let up at Tropical Park.

Columbus (5-4, 4-1 District 14-8A), took a 48-0 lead through three quarters and cruised against winless Coral Park (0-5, 0-10).

Nick McBeath led the defense with two fumble recoveries and a touchdown, as well as a touchdown on offense.

“Obviously, when the defense doesn’t allow any points we are going to win games,” coach Chris Merritt said. “In our five victories this year, the opposing offense hasn’t scored a point.”

The Explorers are in line to be the district runner-up, but it all comes down to Friday night’s game between Coral Gables and Miami Beach. If Gables loses, there will be a three-way tie, and if Gables wins, Columbus will be the runner-up.
