Water main break in Miami Beach blocks Alton Road traffic

By Carli Teproff

Alton Road in Miami Beach will remain blocked Wednesday night after a water main broke at 10th Street, according the Florida Department of Transportation.

Contractors were working on installing a new line next to the existing line when the break occurred, said Heather Leslie, a spokesperson with FDOT. Some 85 customers lost water, after the water main was shut off, according to Miami Beach officials.

The work is part of a $32-million drainage project that began in April and will continue through the summer of 2015.

The break caused some flooding on the west side of the busy thoroughfare. The repairs were expected to be completed by 9 p.m.

Motorists traveling west on 10th Street were not able to cross Alton Road.

However, access to 10th Street is still available via West Avenue.

This breaking news story will be updated as more information becomes available.
