Horoscopes

If today is your birthday: This year you seem far more upbeat than you have been in a while. You’ll still have periods when you might be withdrawn, which is normal for you. Your public image blossoms, especially after July. Know what you want, and go for it. If you are single, you could meet someone who is very deep before summer. After July, you could meet someone quite joyful. If you are attached, the two of you will decide to schedule a special trip this year. This adventure could affect your bond. Traveling would be best before summer. Leo knows how to make you smile.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Hop in the car and go for a ride as far away as possible and/or reasonable. A change of scenery helps you detach, and it also allows greater give-and-take. A loved one seems to be chattier than usual once you arrive home. Tonight: Be with a favorite person.

This Week: Others look to you to take the lead. You might not have a choice.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You could be taken aback by a situation that seems unresolvable. The person in question might seem as cold as ice when you try to initiate a conversation. Don’t worry — he or she will come around. A family member loves time together with you. Make it so. Tonight: Keep it light.

This Week: Detach, detach, detach.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You can’t stop a friend or loved one from dominating. It is a part of this person’s personality, and you need to accept it. If you are not up for a social occasion, decide to go for something more intimate, like a cozy picnic. Tonight: Go along with someone’s wishes.

This Week: A partner dominates most of the week. Do not get upset.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20): Give more of yourself to a situation or a cause that means a lot to you. A phone call to someone at a distance might not be returned. Let it go, and make a point to enjoy the people who are presently with you instead. Tonight: Get a head start on tomorrow.

This Week: Let others do their thing. They will know when they go too far.

Aries (March 21-April 19): Holding you back would be more than challenging. A partner might be depressed or overserious. Understand that you can do only so much. Go off and do what you want, but don’t avoid a conversation. Tonight: Your sensitivity means a lot to someone else.

This Week: Work proves to be demanding. Try to take Friday off.

Taurus (April 20-May 20): You might want to have a long-overdue talk, but you could be intimidated by a facet of the discussion. A loved one could be distancing him- or herself without intending to hurt you. This person just needs some space. Tonight: Communication could be subject to a misunderstanding.

This Week: Tame your creativity if you want it to be effective.

Gemini (May 21-June 20): You might want to try a new approach with someone who has not been as responsive as you would like. If you can wait awhile before having any deep talks, it would be best; otherwise, an even bigger misunderstanding could emerge. Tonight: Hang out with pals.

This Week: Try working away from the crowd.

Cancer (June 21-July 22): You might expect someone to see a personal situation far differently from how you see it. However, when this person presents his or her views, you’ll find that this is not the case. What he or she thinks could give you some helpful insight. Tonight: Make it your treat.

This Week: Speak your mind, but try to be diplomatic.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22): You might be as happy as can be wondering what you want to do next. You could be taken aback by a family member who has a very strong point of view and who is a bit of a downer. A talk might seem like it can resolve the issue, and hopefully it will. Tonight: As you like it.

This Week: Use care with your finances and monetary commitments.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You could be pressured beyond any level of your comprehension. Someone does not see a personal matter in the same light that you do. Talking might make you feel even more misunderstood. Detach and be gracious, no matter what happens. Tonight: Get some extra rest.

This Week: Your effectiveness peaks through Thursday. Use it well.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Emphasize what is positive in your life, and you will feel as if nothing can stop you. Understand exactly what is happening behind the scenes or with the undercurrents that surround you. Decide not to play into them. Tonight: Be where the action is.

This Week: Try to be a loner for a few days. You will be happier as a result.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Your attitude might be particularly intense, especially to an older friend or loved one. You are handling a lot, only you do it in a much different way from this person. He or she might not comprehend why you need to be so solemn. Tonight: A force to be dealt with.

This Week: Zero in on what you want with the support of likeminded people.

“The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton — it’s a book built around characters and plots inspired by astrological principles. It’s a neo-Victorian murder mystery and a mere 832 pages long, and it made 28-year-old Catton the youngest person to win the coveted Man Booker Prize. The voice is natural, easy to understand and ambitious; she’s a novelist who is seeking to reclaim the authorial, a writer who seeks to entertain and enlighten.”
