Pinecrest police officer arrested, accused of having sex with a 16-year-old

A Pinecrest police officer accused of illegally having sex with a 16-year-old girl was relieved of duty without pay Friday.

Kevin McKenzie, 38, an officer since 2000, was arrested early Friday and charged with four counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

“Officer McKenzie has violated the public trust, dishonored his oath of office and tarnished the badge,’’ the department said in a statement Friday.

The arrest was made by the Miami-Dade police sexual battery bureau, which did not detail how McKenzie met the girl. Pinecrest Police Chief Samuel Ceballos will recommend to the village administration that McKenzie be fired, the department said.

In a community newspaper profile, McKenzie described himself as a graduate of Sunset High who dabbled in modeling on South Beach before becoming a cop.
