Shannon, Guerrier power Hialeah-Miami Lakes past Westland Hialeah

Hialeah-Miami Lakes (2-6) defeated Westland Hialeah (2-6) at Milander Park on Thursday night.

Hialeah-Miami Lakes ran for 167 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Malik Shannon rushed for two touchdowns and 55 yards on 14 carries in the first half.

Westland Hialeah quarterback Romel Guerrier carried the ball 17 times for 200 yards and one touchdown. Guerrier also threw for two touchdowns.

Hialeah-Miami Lakes held Westland Hialeah scoreless in the second half. Defensive back Kenneth Donaldson returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown to give the Trojans a 28-21 lead with 5:58 remaining in the game.

“We put together a pretty complete game on both sides of the ball,” Hialeah-Miami Lakes coach Kenan Lawhorne said.

    A historic 2013 football season for Miami-Dade County included a record four state champions. Westminster Christian, a state semifinalist in Class 3A, finished a couple of wins short of joining the festivities.
