The world’s largest cave, Son Doong Cave in Vietnam, is starting public adventure tours in February that let you sleep inside overnight. The trip, offered by Oxalis Adventure Tours, costs $3,000 for a week, plus airfare. You don’t have to be a professional spelunker to go — but it would certainly help. Why? This place is remote. It involves a long journey to get there, rappelling into the cave 260 feet down and pretty much roughing it, sleeping in the cave for two nights. The cave, discovered in 1991 and first explored in 2009, is about 5 1/2 miles long with underground rivers, exotic forests (lit by unusual gaps in the cave roof) and ceilings that in some places are a half-mile high.
Details: Oxalis tells us next year’s tours are nearly sold out, so might be best to plan now for 2015. www.oxalis.com.vn/son-doong-treks/son-doong-tour-3.
