Tomas powers Belen to District 16-3A crown

The boys’ cross-country team at Belen Jesuit is a juggernaut, and it proved that again Thursday at Larry & Penny Thompson Park, where they placed the top seven runners and easily ran away with the district meet.

The Wolverines proved to be the team to beat in District 16-3A, as they took down Homestead, Hialeah-Miami Lakes, Doral, TERRA and Mater Academy.

Senior Fabian Tomas led the way for Belen by winning the meet in 3:12.1.

Teammate Ryan Rodriguez followed in 3:12.6, and Alexander Isaac rounded out the top three in 3:19.9

The Wolverines also showed talent on both ends of the age spectrum.

Three of their top seven runners are seniors, one is a junior, two are sophomores and in sixth place was Joshua Collins, who is in eighth grade, with a time of 3:27.4.

Miami Central took the top honors on the girls’ side, beating out Doral, Northwestern, Carol City, Mater and Homestead.

Destiny Johnson of Homestead ran into the No. 1 spot in 3:58.4. In the second spot was Lianna Farnesi of Doral in 4:02.4, and Megan Moussa from TERRA rounded out the top three in 4:09.1.

• The Lourdes girls dominated in the District 15-4A meet, placing six runners in the top 10.

Coral Park finished second and Coral Gables ended up third, with Reagan, American and Miami Beach rounding out the top six.

Lourdes Brea of Lourdes won the meet in 3:57.2, teammate Lauren Garcia ran a 4:02.4 to place second, and Madison Fernandez followed closely in 4:02.7 to round out Lourdes’ clean sweep of the top three.
