Sweetwater announced Thursday that Police Chief Roberto Fulgueira has retired and that Deputy Chief Jesus M. Menocal will run the department on an interim basis.
Fulgueira started with the department more than 30 years ago.
“Chief Fulgueira wishes to spend more time with his family and has decided to officially retire,” Lt. Jorge Fernandez de Lara said in a statement.
Menocal is a 27-year veteran and a graduate of South Miami High. His appointment is effective immediately.
Fulgueira’s departure comes at a sensitive time amid the ranks and at City Hall, which ahs been rocked by the arrest and suspension of the mayor and the arrest of a detective and the suspensions of others.
In August, detective William Garcia was arrested by the FBI and accused of fraud and identity theft over the use of phony credit cards. A week later, Sgt. Reny García and detective Octavio Oliu were suspended with pay as a result of the federal agency’s investigations. Civilian employee Richard Brenner was suspended with pay but later returned to work
