Beer of the week: Lagunitas Pils

Beer: Lagunitas Pils

Style: Czech-style pilsner

Alcohol: 6 percent by volume

Price: About $9 a six-pack of 12-ounce bottles at Fresh Market

Story: The pilsner style of lager was born in the 1840s in the Bohemian city of Pilsen, where brewers used a variety of hops from the Czech city of Saaz, about an hour north. Saaz hops give traditional pilsners grassy, spicy and floral aromas and flavors. That’s what you’ll find in Lagunitas Pils, a classic Czech-style pilsner brewed in Petaluma, Calif.

Pairing: When matched with aggressively seasoned food, Lagunitas Pils cleanly lifts the spice off your palate. Test that theory by pairing it with a Mexican hot dog – sausage, mozzarella, chili and potato sticks – from La Perrada de Edgar in Miami Beach.
