AmericanAirlines Arena, Miami plenty of ties, wins with WWE

Miami Herald Writer

This weekend it’s WWE that will be bringing the heat to Miami with the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27 at a familiar venue, the AmericanAirlines Arena.

It’s the first pay-per-view in South Florida from the sports entertainment juggernaut since WrestleMania 28.

The event is headlined by Randy Orton facing Daniel Bryan for the vacant WWE championship with WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels serving as special referee.

Miami has connections to the main event. Shawn Michaels wore the striped shirt for the Undertaker and Triple H Hell in a Cell classic during WrestleMania 28 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens. The Heartbreak Kid also battled Orton at Survivor Series in 2007 in the AmericanAirlines Arena.

Miami’s AmericanAirlines Arena was also home to the rise of Bryan’s “Yes!” chants that have become his trademark. The Viper and the Beard already had a series of stellar matches, so expect more of the same on Sunday. Look for the Big Show, who calls South Florida home, to make some sort of appearance during the spectacular. Maybe he will drive a monster truck to work?

His South Florida home is about 12 miles from the AmericanAirlines Arena.

Hell in a Cell will be the WWE Homecoming of John Cena, who returns to the ring from injury to challenge South Florida’s Alberto Del Rio for the World title. Cena’s fan response is normally a mixed bag, so don’t be surprised to hear a chorus of “Si!” from Del Rio’s hometown crowd. Cena was destroyed by NEXUS during that faction’s debut on a Monday Night Raw at the AmericanAirlines Arena, and the Mexican aristocrat actually won the World championship in the AmericanAirlines Arena during a WWE Smackdown taping.

The Hell in a Cell steel structure will not only be used for the WWE championship match, but for Ryback and Paul Heyman’s collision with CM Punk. Heyman always has a plan, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see Brock Lesnar part of it. The powerhouse hasn’t been seen since August and still has a score to settle with Punk. The odds are also improved knowing Lesnar returned to WWE at the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami the night after WrestleMania 28.

Also on the WWE Hell in a Cell card, Brie Bella challenges AJ Lee for the diva’s title; Goldust and Cody Rhodes, the Usos and The Shield’s Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns collide in a triple threat tag team championship match. The preshow at 7:30 p.m. will feature Big E Langston going after Curtis Axel’s Intercontinental title.

Tickets are sale via TicketMaster outlets, online and by phone as well as at the AAA box office. Keep posted at
