Miami-bound American Airlines flight forced to land in Turks and Caicos

Miami-bound passengers on an American Airlines flight got an unexpected visit to the Turks and Caicos Islands Tuesday when their plane from Trinidad had mechanical problems.

The 168-passengers and six-member crew were diverted to Providenciales airport after American Airlines Flight 2282 from Port of Spain reported mechanical issues, Laura Masvidal, an airline spokeswoman said. The flight safely landed at 10:20 a.m. and was towed to the gate. Video of the plane on the runway showed Turks and Caicos firefighters hosing it down with its doors opened. Passengers were still inside.

Passengers were kept in the secure area of the airport and remained in the departure lounge. But outside some duty-free shopping and purchases from the restaurant, they didn’t get to experience much of the British dependent territory.

They were later put on another flight and were scheduled to arrive in Miami at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

“We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience,” Masvidal said.
