The Oct. 13 article written by Neil Amdur, The legend of Coral Gables’ star Larry Rentz continues to live on, missed the bigger story. Of course, Rentz’s achievements were remarkable; however, the real story should have been about when high school football was king. Innumerable high school football heroes from South Florida could have been found from teams that surpassed whatever one year of football success at any one high school could have achieved, such as the 1961 Miami High Stingarees team — the first local team to achieve the No. 1 ranking in the United States. And yes, the homecoming and Thanksgiving Day games with intense rivalries filled the Orange Bowl years before the Dolphins came to town; even UM had glory years in that stadium.
