Miami-Dade High School roundup

Columbus training staff receives national honor

There are more than 750 high schools in Florida, and Columbus High School is just one of two Florida schools to be named by The National Athletic Trainers’ Association as a “Safe Sports School 1st Team.”

The award recognizes the work of the Columbus training department, and their focus in sports safety and concern with the well-being of its student athletes.

“We received the award because we offer an excellent athletic training facility that is well-equipped to take care of students both physically and mentally,” head trainer Herb Baker said in a statement.

The top-of-the-line equipment includes several treatment tables, muscle stimulators, ultrasound machines, whirlpools, bicycles, treadmills, game-ready machines and portable water tanks. Columbus also offers treatments to any athletes if injured, and on many occasions those treatments resolve any costly issues the athletes might have.

“We act as the first responders here. If there is ever an injury, we are there to treat and evaluate them, often times we eliminate the student’s need to go elsewhere for expensive medical services,” Baker said.
