Coral Reef trounces South Dade in volleyball

TEAMS OF THE WEEK

Palmetto’s boys’ and Coral Reef’s girls’ swimming and diving teams won the GMAC championships this past week. The Panthers boys won the 400-free relay. Kelly Fertel led the Barracudas girls by winning the 100 breaststroke and the 200 IM.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Romell Guerrier, Westland Hialeah, football: Guerrier ran for 175 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to a 35-9 win against Mourning.

Jamal Adjamah, Mater Academy, football: Adjamah scored five touchdowns and ran for 152 yards to lead the Lions over Goleman.

Olin Cushion, Central, football: Cushion had two interceptions and a fumble recovery in the Rockets’ 37-20 win against Homestead.

Caroline Sklaver, Ransom Everglades, volleyball: Sklaver earned tournament MVP honors to help Ransom win the Chaminade-Madonna Cares Invitational.

Maria Jose Estupinan, Varela, volleyball: Estupinan had 72 assists, 31 digs, 22 kills and five aces to help the Vipers win the Palm Beach Classic championship.

Guy Fernandez, MAST, boys’ swimming: Fernandez won the 100 back and 100 fly at the GMAC championships.

Isabella Paez, Reagan, girls’ swimming: Paez won the 100 free and 100 back at the GMAC championships.

Nick Diaz, Sunset, boys’ cross-country: Diaz won the Junior Orange Bowl Invitational race with a time of 16 minutes 25.46 seconds.

Tristan Enriquez, American, boys’ cross-country: Enriquez won the Open race at the Junior Orange Bowl Invitational in 17:33.82.

Katrina Santiago, Ferguson, girls’ cross-country: Santiago won the Junior Orange Bowl Invitational race with a time of 19:05.46.

Daesha Rogers, Jackson, girls’ cross-country: Rogers won the Open race at the Junior Orange Bowl Invitational in 20:17.76.

Juan Yumar, Columbus, boys’ golf: Yumar shot a 5-under-par 67 to win the GMAC championship.

Lauren Eustace, Coral Reef, girls’ golf: Eustace shot an 86 to win the GMAC championship.

Alex Yaniz, Miami Christian, boys’ bowling: Yaniz bowled a 690 high series to secure the Youth Fair Invitational title.

Tori Burstein, TERRA, girls’ bowling: Burstein bowled a 574 to win the Youth Fair Invitational.

The Coral Reef girls’ volleyball team (14-2) continued its winning season as it shut down South Dade on Monday afternoon.

The Barracudas won in three sets 25-9, 25-6, 25-23.

Kristine Rios led the Barracudas with 13 assists, eight kills and an ace. Teammates Amanda Orzechowicz registered 13 assists and four aces, and Janel Kemp added five kills and three blocks.

Coral Reef will next take on Varela at 7:15 pm.

•  Palmetto d. Southridge 25-6, 25-4, 25-7: Emily Sarasa 18 assists, 9 aces. Taylor David 8 kills. Lauren Phillips 9 digs, 5 aces, 4 kills. PAL 9-5.

•  Sagemont d. Doctors Charter 26-24, 25-23, 17-25, 25-16: Megan Bodden 25 kills, 10 digs, 8 points. Samantha Quan 16 points, 3 aces, 12 digs. SAG 11-7.

BOYS’ BOWLING

The Miami Christian boys’ bowling team continued its winning season after sweeping Belen.

The Yaniz brothers struck again as they picked up both high games and series for the Victors. Alex Yaniz took home a high game of 257 and a high series of 740. Jeffrey Yaniz scored a high game of 194.

The Victors improved to 5-3.

Miami Country Day (21) defeated Coral Springs Christian (62) Westwood (102), and Archbishop Curley (104).

Isabella Allen took first place for the Spartans in 22:24. Archbishop Curley’s Rhian Romanik was second in 22:44 followed by Miami Country Day’s Mary Elizabeth Allen in 23:24.

The Spartans improved to 10-1 with the victory.
