Osaka, Japan (SportsNetwork.com) - Second-seeded German Sabine Lisicki was among the winners Tuesday in the first round of the HP Open, while fourth- seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta exited the tournament.
Lisicki beat Chanelle Scheepers by a 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) margin. Next up for Lisicki is Polona Hercog of Slovenia, who outlasted Czech Petra Cetkovska 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.
American Vania King took down Pennetta by a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 score. Another upset took place when Kimiko Date-Krumm discarded seventh-seeded Laura Robson 6-4, 6-4.
American Madison Keys, the No. 6 seed, moved on with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Anna Schmiedlova, while ninth-seeded Kristina Mladenovic beat Aleksandra Wozniak 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
Other winners Tuesday were Zheng Jie and Zhang Shuai of China, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland, Luksika Kumkhum of Thailand and Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
