Lunching at a small downtown eatery on Thursday, I asked the proprietor how business was. She said it was good enough to be opening a new restaurant on South Beach. But, the young woman said, she couldn’t get her federal tax I.D. number because of the government shutdown.
Now I’ll think of her every time I hear some politician yack about how small business is the backbone of the U.S. economy.
Come to think about it, what do they know about backbones?
