Trevon Sands scores three TDs to power Southwest to victory against Sunset

Special to the Miami Herald

Trevon Sands ran for 103 yards and three touchdowns in the first half of a 44-6 Southwest simmering of Sunset.

“I came out hungry and was just trying to step my game up,” Sands said. “We came out looking good and my offensive line stayed with me.”

The Eagles (4-0, 2-0 15-8A) scored 28 points in the first quarter.

Quindale Corker put the exclamation point on the blowout with a 70-yard punt return to end the first frame.

“We told the kids earlier that this was a district game and we cant take them lightly,” Eagles coach Tim Neal said. We want to stay ahead of everything.”

After posting a 38-0 halftime edge, the Eagles sat most of their starters in the second half.

The Knights lone score came on a Juwel Laguerre two-yard run. Quarterback D’undre Pickett-White found James Barnes on an 82-yard touchdown pass for the Eagles’ last score.

Barnes also tallied 12 carries for 83 rushing yards. Laguerre was the only offensive output for the Knights with 16 carries for 85 yards. The Knights first first down did not come until 8:10 in the second quarter.

“We don’t want to slip into a situation like we did three years ago (in district play) where we ended up in a three way tie breaker,” Neal said. “We had to focus on getting things done. We had the chance to get in some freshman and get some junior varsity guys some reps.”

Corker also had an interception and fumble recovery in the victory. Da’Shawn Dawkins had an interception in the loss. The Eagles out-gained the Knights 328 offensive yards to 99 offensive yards.
