Ignorance breeds fear

Fabiola Santiago’s astute Sept. 28 column, Ted-I-am might like green eggs and ham, regarding Sen. Ted Cruz’s feeble attempt to filibuster, including reciting Green Eggs and Ham, so that Obamacare wouldn’t receive funding reminds me of how the same type of visionless and ignorant lawmakers tried to sabotage FDR’s Social Security plan.

I have yet to hear or read about a Republican tearing up their Social Security check to protest what the party had labeled at the time as communism. Ignorance breeds fear, and there are many special interests that have and will continue to help the fear mongers in making sure Obamacare doesn’t move forward.

Ten years from now, I suspect the majority of Republicans will be grateful that the president, just like FDR, did not waver.

  • Lessons from China

Kudos to my congresswoman, U.S. Rep Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, and Sen. Marco Rubio for sending their staffers to China. This should help open their eyes (and the eyes of their staffers) to what a real and effective policy toward Cuba should look like.

  • Corruption at corrections

Randall Jordan-Amparo’s death in the hands of a system of a callous, corrupt crew in Florida’s corrections system is outrageous and unacceptable. I thank the Miami Herald for illuminating this travesty of justice.

  • FIU expansion has benefits

Through the years, I have enjoyed the Youth Fair with my family. I have also been delighted at how much Florida International University has grown and flourished.
